Red hues radiate the pure vibrations of our passions. Born of a curious spark and fueled by inspiration, our passions are the magnetizing pull of creation. Like lava creates the leading edges of land, red represents the mature manifestation of our purpose. Hibiscus flowers in full bloom, sizzling embers beneath a crescent moon, blush streaks in a sunset sky— all mesmerizing reminders of our own inner flame.
Indigo and Red hues are featured in our She’s Solid Collection to amplify the expression of your exquisite true nature. Made with your rhythmic evolution in mind, they’re comfortable, durable, reversible, and crafted-to-contour. So, you may sway and play and pursue your passions in a harmonious way.

At the apex of spring, when warm light and wildflowers imbue our landscape with renewed energy, Earth Day is planted on our calendars as a reminder to connect. This time of year is brimming with opportunity. Expressions of nature’s vitality flutter in the fresh air, beckoning our attention and inviting us to bear witness to the spectacle of our planet.
By focusing our awareness on the natural world around us, we’re investing our most precious resource, our pure energy, into the very fabric of life itself. For, the elemental composition of our planet is the basis from which all life blossoms— including us.
So, since the theme for Earth Day 2022 is “Invest in Our Planet,” we invite you to invest via your presence. Take a moment to connect, to bear witness, to acknowledge the elemental forces that are pulsing with life around and within you.
FIRE
Take a step outside. Wherever you are on the planet, the sun is extending its rays in your direction. Like a solar panel, rotate your body to receive. Close your eyes. Bring your attention to your exposed skin, to your cells, to the subtle increase in vibration that reverberates through your being with each soft kiss from the sun. Feel your inner fire ignite from the electric charge of solar power.
EARTH
Find a flower. Any flower. A meadow wildflower, a concrete encrusted dandelion, a grocery store rose— all flowers are a unique expression of beauty. Hold that flower within your fingers as delicately as your grasp will allow. Or, if you choose to leave it rooted, bow your head towards its blossom. Close your eyes. And breathe. Inhale the fragrance, the aromatic molecules, the scent of ambrosial nectar perfectly designed to draw in an admirer. And admire.
AIR
Go outside. Or open a window. Close your eyes. Focus your attention on the air around you; decipher its course of direction. Even if it’s faint, tune in to its motion, its movement, its traverse. And listen. Where did this breeze come from and what has its journey been? What information has it absorbed along the way? Does it carry a message? And, if so… what wisdom is this wind awakening from within?
WATER
Ocean, river, rain, stream, shower, cup of spring water— the intention is to taste the cellular intelligence contained in liquid crystalline form. Choose your medicine, salty or sweet, each has a blueprint to bestow. And one drop will do. Open your mouth, place an orb upon your tongue, and allow the element that connects us all to hydrate your being with the true nature of coherence.
Investing in a Manakai Swimsuit is a legendary first step on the path of sustainability. Though your journey to get to this point should also be honored: every whisper of the wind that you heeded, every time you listened to the call of the ocean, each mindful step upon a sandy shore, and each leap of faith into an abyss unknown.
By honoring your internal compass, you’ve navigated your way into right relations with the environment. And there’s nothing more fulfilling than honoring the very source of the fabric we’re comprised of.
Taking care of the delicate fabric of our earth is no different than taking care of our possessions. The more we care for our items, the longer they last. And the longer an item lasts, the less we need to consume. Less consumption equals less waste, and less waste equates to more energy and resources freed up for our true priorities, our passions, our creative potential.
The manifestation of many, many sustainability-minded choices, Manakai bikinis are crafted to replicate nature’s structural integrity. However, like everything in nature, they too have a life cycle. The fun part is that you can make educated, empowered choices to maintain their structural integrity and extend their life.
Sun, salt, chlorine, oils from lotion and sunscreen— the elements that bikinis are most exposed to are also the ones that break down elastane, the composite of Manakai swimsuits. So, minimizing exposure and unnecessary saturation of your bikini is a simple way of ensuring its longevity.
We recommend gently hand-washing your bikini. Dish soap is ideal because it’s a cleansing degreaser (to remove oils), whereas laundry detergent contains harsh chemicals that dissolve fabrics over time. That said, it’s best to avoid conventional washing machines. Machine washing not only breaks down synthetic material, the resulting micro plastics leach through filters into water tables and, eventually, the ocean. Plus, the high heat of a dryer destroys the elastane too.
So, rather than compromise your swimsuit for the sake of convenience, take the sustainable route and treat it with respect. In turn, it will offer you an extended life and more connected experience.
Here’s our refined recipe for proper swimsuit care:
Mahalo for following your internal compass and paving a sustainable path of prosperity with us! Intentionally suited, may you embody your brightest potential.

As the sun rises atop a ridge line or surfaces over the salty horizon, it brings with it the dawning of a new day, a new moment, a new reality. Soft shades of peaches and oranges color the canvas of life. And, in the warm fluorescence of morning’s golden glow, we’re invited to breathe in the creative potential of blossoming light.
]]>
Orange, mango, saffron, turmeric, pollen, and peach— colors that correspond to our sacral chakra, the sacred space where seeds of inspiration awaken. Like genetic codes are conserved in the ancient embrace of amber, ready to be rediscovered, so is our creative purpose cocooned in these colors, radiant and ready to be realized.
Lavender & Pink
Lime & Light Blue
The elemental spectacle of light blues and greens is woven into the fabric of this earth. It’s seen in the sea. It’s present in plants. It dances upon the stage of sable northern skies. Light blue softly stimulates the conductivity of water existing within all sentient beings. It awakens a feeling of connection, of cohesion, of liquid elation. Lime evokes a sense of freshness, flora, euphoria. Lime is the electric current of familiarity that runs through our collective cellular composition. Together, lime and light blue remind us of what’s timeless and true.

Would you like to know how we test our She's Solid Collection? We send several pieces with women who literally live in their bikini and on boats and wait for the feedback. Here is what one salty sailor says about her experience wearing her Manakai.
"Like gems of the sea, I treasured my first Manakai swimsuits, wearing them rarely and only on special occasions. I felt the need to protect them, to do everything in my power to preserve their crystalline condition. They were every emanation of quality— so sound, so vibrant, so lovely.
Like a redwood or coral reef or rose, my relationship with my Manakai suits was one of conservation. Tread lightly and mindfully. Take care of this precious resource. For, it was made with intention and symbolize beauty and beckons respect.
Then… life happened. Reality caught up with reverence. And, as my quiver of other bathing suits withered and weathered and eventually dissolved to threads, I was left with only my mint Manakai’s to outfit my ocean-oriented lifestyle. So, I swallowed my pious pill and started putting them to the test.
I beach ran and never bounced out.
I surfed and never surfaced de-robed.
I deck washed and scrubbed nonskid and never pilled.
I sailed and somehow evaded any semblance of sun-fade.
I swam and dove and danced and they’ve still never stretched.
I live in my swimsuits. They are my uniform. I spend more time in a bikini than I do in any other piece of clothing and, while I’m in them, I use them. I wear them. After nearly a year of rocking my first round of Manakai’s to the bone, I still get remarks like, “I love your new suit! Where’d you get it?”
As it turns out, the more I wear them, the more I treasure them. For, they’re withstanding the test of time and the nature of an elemental lifestyle. They’re reminding me that there’s a fine line between conservation and being too conservative. I can be mindful and respectful and reverent and get after it.
Like a redwood or a coral reef or a rose, these suits inspire awe. They are a precious resource. However, one need not tread lightly. They’re made to endure, to enhance, and moreover, to experience. One can witness the beauty of a rose from afar, but the reality of inhaling her aroma or gently caressing her petals is an experience. So suit up and go experience." -Amelia

This is where sun meets moon, where sea meets sky, where kundalini rises from the roots of sacred botanicals into elevated winged expansion. This is where it all uncoils, unveils, unites… in the center—at the heart.
Cosmic Mountain Print is featured on the revered canvases of the Kava Kava and Copal One Pieces. Both styles conform to a variety of body types and torso lengths. And the reversible designs offer the liberty of two-suits-in-one. One side expresses the earthy energy of Cosmic Mountain, while a complimentary celestial print is revealed on the opposite side.
Hawk’s wings stretch across the chest of the Kava Kava one piece in a testimony of ascended potential and elegant precision. Soaring on the convergence of solar and lunar currents, this suit is a luxury performance piece. The razor back design and adjustable side laces allow for a refined fit, while the low scoop neckline and contoured bottom coverage provide a humble sensual appeal. Geometric lines honor the grounding nature of alignment. Medicinal archetypes offer sacred suggestions. And an earth-toned color scheme brings balance to the powerful pallet.
The majesty of a mountain-scape is regally imbued onto the sleek fit of the Copal One Piece.
While a tastefully slatted chest design denotes the strength of a grateful heart, the open back invites the full embrace of that which to be grateful for. The symbolic totems of hawk, boa, and brugmansia are but a few of nature’s noble gifts, intentionally placed to accentuate the graceful movements of the feminine form. Cheeky bottom coverage blends into the minimal back design. Pastel tones balance the bold botanical accents. And discrete straps tie it all together with sultry appeal.
]]>We love receiving news that Manakai Swimwear made the list of THE BEST ECO FRIENDLY SWIMWEAR FOR YOUR HOLIDAYS, provided by Eluxe Magazine.
]]>Eluxe magazine is the world’s FIRST ever publication fully dedicated to sustainable luxury.
They have a quarterly published paper magazine and a daily updated digital publication based in London, dedicated to showcasing luxury brands that demonstrate a strong commitment to good ethics and environmental sustainability.
Eluxe determines a brand’s sustainability based on several factors, including whether it:
Manakai Swimwear is Maui’s first high-fashion, low-impact, made-in-America swimwear brand created from regenerated nylon . Their newest collection uses an eco-friendly techno fabric made with ECONYL ®, a 100% regenerated nylon fibre made from fishing nets and other waste that is polluting the maritime world.
Why we love it: What we love even more is that many of these eco friendly swimwear designs is actually two in one! Just turn it inside-out and you have a whole new outfit! Plus, we love how Manakai collaborates with artists. For example, their She’s One of a Kind collection was designed in conjunction with Cosmic Collage to make awesome art on their swimwear.

"We pulled up to the Lahaina loading dock just after dawn, casting lines from the starboard side of s/v Wild Thing to the same weathered pilings that pirates and Polynesian princesses and pedestrians have relied on for nearly a century.
At the time, I was more pedestrian than pirate. And, as I stood before a group of quintessential queens, I felt far from of any regal archetype, even that of a princess.
One by one, the women stepped from the loading dock to the stern of the catamaran. They were adorned with lovely hats that shaded their perceptive eyes, flowing pareos, and jewels that dripped from their sun-kissed skin. And they came bearing baskets of produce and flowers and sacred offerings, which I delicately helped transfer aboard.
Despite the dazzling array of forms, the ambiance was peaceful. The air crisp, the sun soft, the seas serene— all elements divinely converging for a ceremonial Manakai day sail.
As crew aboard the s/v Wild Thing, I kept a respectful distance from our guests. However, this divide was soon dissolved by a deeper exchange, a gift of being seen for something I was yet to see in myself…
Within an hour of casting off and hoisting the sails, I was called up to the foredeck. Expecting to lend a helping hand, I was instead met by an embrace. Before me was a circle of sisters with a single seat left open. All women aboard were welcome, including Captain Kerstin and myself. Within that circle, I met, for the first time, the collective manifestation— the essence— of Manakai.
While I was yet to comprehend the significance of that day, it now stands out as a pivotal point in my journey. Recalling those moments literally brings tears to my eyes. Like a droplet of water upon the still waters of a misty dawn, that day sent a ripple of resonance through my being. Silently, softly, synchronistically, the energy of Manakai awakened within me… summoning forth my mana (life force) and sanctifying my relationship with kai (the ocean, the sea, the wise waters of the world).
Since that day (a mere seven months ago) I’ve sailed over 8000 nautical miles, traversed three blue water passages, surfed waves that pushed me over the falls of my comfort zone, spent breathtaking minutes diving into the surreal South Pacific seas, and sipped ancient earthen memories from florescent glaciers along Alaska’s coastal wilderness.
I’ve communed with coral and been carried by countless currents. I’ve counted my blessings, tide-by-tide. I’ve found my infinitely-fluctuating flow.
(View The Sweet Basil Bottoms)
Since that day, I’ve resurrected my inner-pirate, I’ve incarnated the kind of queen that wears a wildflower garland for a crown, I’ve relinquished my self-limiting, pedestrian ways.
In stride, I’ve united with Manakai. Now, adorned with a uniform that befits my unbridled elemental existence, I get to explore the inspiring seascapes… and, whether serendipitously or divinely, I get to be a voice for the wisdoms that flow forth from the life source (the mana of kai) that connects us all.
Mahalo, Kelley, for on-boarding me as a writer for Manakai Swimwear. It’s an absolute honor to collaborate with you, to coalesce, to contribute my gifts to a cause that stretches far beyond the surface of what we see."

As gatekeepers to a world existing beyond our frame of mind, artists’ role in society is invaluable. They are our visionaries, our luminaries, our creators. They are shooting stars in the seemingly static sky— daring to be different and captivating our attention in the act.
Allured by the magnetic nature of the muse, artists venture into the vast expanses of potential and return with a gift for the collective. These gifts are gateways into new worlds, new perceptions, new lenses to view the spectacle of life from. Imbued with a unique signature, each creation of art is one of a kind, an expression of existence from an inspired vantage.
When art catches our attention, something happens. A glimmer of curiosity grows into an activating spark. And that activating spark awakens us— ignites our inner stardust. We are drawn into the artist's universe, where we merge with a channeled stream of consciousness.
As we continue to evolve as a conscious collective, it’s time to revolutionize art in our value system. Instead of perpetuating the “starving artist” mentality, it’s time to feed our artists, to fuel their fire, to honor their genius. For, they are our humble way-showers, illuminating life within a new moon night.
To initiate a more integral system, one where art is respected as a vital contribution to society, Manakai is revealing an enlivened collection— She’s One of a Kind.
She’s One of a Kind is the creation of a spirited call to action. Inspired by the supernatural power of art, Manakai and Cosmic Collage have converged on the canvas of sustainable clothe. Showcasing the ethereal majesty of nature’s form, the art print of Cosmic Collage serendipitously brings Manakai suites to life with a multidimensional force.
Beyond the form of a bikini, She’s One of a Kind is a collection of intentional art for activated embodiment. In celebration of this co-creation, Manakai is up-leveling the industry standard for artist’ compensation. As this paradigm shifts, everyone is elevated: the artist, the patron, the earth and the muse itself.

Beauty is a bird song harmonized with fluttering palm fronds. It is the sheen of sunlight cast upon a peeling wave on a windless day. Beauty is a flickering golden flame in contemplative eyes, framed by feral silvery hair. It is the wisps that forewarn of an approaching squall and the ravaging, spiraling whirlwind of a tornado.
Beauty is nature’s purest expression. It’s wild and raw, striking and unpredictable; it’s the electricity that runs up your spine when truth is realized. Beauty is captivating. Because when we encounter truth, we experience a knowing that resonates in the deepest cords of our coding.
Fauna and flora and females— we are all imbued with the potential of beauty’s prowess. And when we fearlessly live in alignment with our authentic nature, we invoke that power. It is the power that feeds our soul. It is the power that inspires our Ohana. It is the power that, when harnessed gracefully, fulfills our purpose and harmonizes the earth.
Fauna and flora don’t think about their expression. They exist. And, in authentically existing, they fill an essential niche that nature depends on. So, why should females exist any differently? Embracing our authentic nature promotes diversity in the collective ecosystem. And, diversity is key to harmony, to health, to sustainability.
So by accepting, embracing and honoring our beauty— that beauty that makes you uniquely you— we contribute to a more sustainable existence. Each and every expression of beauty is not only worthy, it is imperative.
We beckon your beauty. We invite you to be you. We invite you to shine, to solidify your essence, to be one of a kind. We honor your beauty, as it is a staple of a sustainable existence. And we welcome the way you elicit electricity up one’s spine— inspiring awe and fulfilling your soul’s purpose.
]]>The support and feedback that has returned to us for carrying out our mission has been undoubtably uplifting and transformative. In Nov 2020, Manakai’s designer profile was featured in British Vogue magazine who described our brand by stating “their philosophy is to celebrate and represent women of all sizes and ethnicities with vibrant pieces that flatter every shape.” The gratitude that we have for Vogue magazine is immense, and for us is proof that when individuals support each other, that love and support creates boundless networks for communities and discussions. Vogue has continued to be a source of support for eco-sustainable designers as well as body positive brands who are all helping to re-shape the fashion industry.
We believe that many individuals are ready and willing to let go of self-doubt and shame. So many individuals and brands are doing great work to re-introduce ideals supporting acceptance of our “flaws” and authentic forms. As we grow and develop, we plan to continually create opportunities to celebrate the human body's intuitive movements and inherent expressions. As our owner Kelley Chapman describes “I really enjoy connecting with all of our models one on one and I watch them completely open up and transform during photo shoots. It’s beautiful to witness.” For us, offering safe spaces through Manakai has given us the access to communicate with our brand in a very sacred way. It is an honor to show love, acceptance and encouragement to our community, while continuing to be mindful of our ecological impact.
If you happen to visit any of our social media sites (Insta:@manakaiswimwear Facebook: Manakai Swimwear) our hope is that even if you are not leaving with a purchase, that you are gaining an experience that supports your own positive self- affirmations. One of our recent videos features an affirmation created by Sierra Mann that speaks “I deserve to be loved and acknowledged at every stage of my metamorphosis.” Our goal is to encourage our community to practice self love and acceptance and to see all body types and stages of life as beautiful, no longer rare or different. Each and every one of us absolutely deserves to be loved and acknowledged. We see you and we love you.
Aloha mākou iā ‘oe (we love you)

How will YOU wear your Manakai?
People often ask me if I have always been interested in sustainability and natural environments? My answer to that is always yes. However, the realm of fashion didn’t present itself to me until I was 31 years old.
As a child I spent my summers exploring the natural world. The Appalachian mountains range was my playground. The idea of “Leave no Trace” was embedded into my being early on. I backpacked, rock climbed, kayaked sections of North Carolina's French Broad and Nantahala Rivers and took 2-week treks through trails around the Blue Ridge Parkway on horseback. Those adventures were a blast! But more importantly I learned valuable skills and also discovered how joyful and satisfied I am when fully immersed nature’s grand abundance.
Fast forward several years and I found myself graduating with a bachelors degree in science with a focus on sustainable tourism and outdoor experiential education. After graduation I lived off the grid for two years in Costa Rica as well as in New Mexico.
Costa Rica opened my eyes to the majestic sea. I was 23 years old the first time I put on a mask and witnessed a coral reef and all its inhabitants. As I emerged from the water I sat on the rocky shore with tears in my eyes. I clearly received a message with clear instructions that I must live near the ocean. Never in a million years did I imagine finding my place on earth, my home, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.
Serendipitously, one year later Maui presented itself to me. While driving around my hometown of Atlanta I was stuck in grid lock. I happened to be behind a car that had "MAUI" stickers plastered all over it. My destination was a friend’s home. She was having a clothing swap. Upon arriving I glanced at the TV. There, on the screen, were breathtaking scenes of this island called "Maui". I was captivated! After a few moments I turned off the TV and joined the clothing swap. Can you guess what the first piece of clothing I randomly selected from the pile was? In my hands was a "Hula MAUI" tee shirt! I laughed out loud. The very next day I purchased a one-way ticket to Maui. That was 2007.
The moment I landed on Maui I knew I was finally home. My only interest was to dive into the vastness of the ocean environment and learn as much as possible about Hawaii's rich and beautiful culture. Today when someone asks me about sustainability I have learned to not only look to earth’s natural resources but also its inhabitants. It's the most valuable lesson I've learned from my studies in sustainable tourism.
When I tap into the mana, the power, of both the natural environment and the culture of different locations around the globe I gain true reverence. With that reverence comes an inner drive to protect it. My intention is to inspire others to do the same.
After many years of working on the water my skin doctor told me I would become his poster child if I did not find a new profession. My days on the water and my life perpetually in a bikini would come to a halt. Shortly thereafter I was hired to take on a management position for a local Maui swimwear company. Working in this new industry and in that small company gave me the ins and outs of building and running a small business. It was all self-taught. I pretty much had freedom to grow that business... and I loved that challenge! I took interest in pattern making, building solid relationships with other vendors, traveling over seas to set up production and designing and building out new store fronts. At the same time I began studying the process of making new fabrics. One question kept coming up in my mind: how important is the idea of "sustainability" within this industry? I found it interesting that the birth of synthetic textiles was, in large part, due to a commercial push for easy production of artificial silk. Needless to say, when I immerse myself in a project I study and learn as much as I can about it. And, as I immersed myself deeper in this industry and spent more time with that company I learned that there were more sustainable and ethical ways to run a swimwear business.
After several years of successfully building and growing that business I was laid off. An investor showed up on my last day. Upon leaving he shook my hand with painful aggression. I gripped back through the pain and looked him directly in the eyes. I smiled and said, “Thank You.”
I was well aware of the term "silver lining" and I knew exactly what I would do next. I was given the green light. As I walked down the stairs leaving a place I put so much of my energy into, I said out loud: “Today is the day I trust in my full potential and capabilities. Today is the day I become a entrepreneur. Today is the day!”
Six months later I made a public announcement about Manakai Swimwear, Hawaii’s first sustainable and ethically produced (in the U.S.A.) swimwear company. Since then Manakai has been in many publications like British VOGUE and has been nominated in several honorable categories as an outstanding business here on Maui. And in July of 2018 I opened my first Eco-Boutique which is located right in the heart of Lahaina Town: 888 Front Street!
I am honored you have chosen to join the Manakai family. In a world of brands focusing on fast fashion, high turn around and even higher profit margins, I am dedicated to avoiding mainstream practices. I operate my small business with a high level of integrity. Manakai’s goal is to provide a growing conscience community with one-of-a-kind, well made, sustainable and ethical swimwear while supporting both women empowerment and ocean conservation.
A Hui Ho (until next time).
So much love,
Kelley Chapman
Sanny writes: "Hello all you wonderful conscious readers, thanks for dropping by. Due to closing of the islands to tourism, small business are suffering all over the world, especially here on Hawaii! ]]>Just in from Turkey. A beautiful article about Sustainable Swimwear Fashion. Manakai is honored to be on the top of the list.
"Did you know that the fashion and textile industry has the second largest share of environmental pollution in the world? The production of synthetic fabrics such as polyester, which use high levels of crude oil and cause harmful gas emissions, makes it impossible to decrease this share. Fortunately, the number of brands that are starting to oppose this corrupt order within the same industry and making their production ethically - at least worldwide - is increasing. The process progresses in a more constructive way in Mayo brands; because the use of fabrics obtained by recycling plastics collected from the oceans keeps the idea of the possibility of living in a better world alive and green.
If you want to support your stylish seaside appearance in an ecological sense, we recommend that you take a look at sustainable swimwear brands." - OGGUSTO

KELLEY CHAPMAN ON FEMALE EMPOWERMENT, BEING A BUSINESS OWNER, AND CREATING HAWAII’S FIRST ECO-CONSCIOUS SUSTAINABLE SWIMWEAR BRAND.
]]>writer and editor: Kiana Kanoa
FOR: HOKU MAGAZINE
WOMEN. Graceful, eloquent, badass…we are the everyday superheroes of society, and yet so many of us are burdened with the overwhelming need to feel perfect. From the entertainment industry to the fashion industry, women are still combating gender roles that have so carelessly defined us. As we focus our mentality towards a more sustainable fashion future, we must not forget that sustainability involves more than just being good to the environment (although that’s an important piece!). It’s time to get real, diversity, equity and inclusion are all key factors towards creating a more sustainable future and with that comes the rise of the girlboss. Today, there are more women-run and women-created businesses than ever before. Which brings us to the ultimate sustainable girlboss, Kelley Chapman, the creator of Hawaii’s first eco-conscious sustainable swimwear brand, Manakai Swimwear.
Self-love starts from within. As a designer Kelley Chapman is not only breaking boundaries in the sustainable swimwear world, but she’s advocating female empowerment across the board – making women feel beautiful and confident from the inside out! The HOKU team was lucky enough to sit down with Chapman and learn more about her inspiring story and the daunting task of creating Manakai Swimwear from the ground up.
To Kelley, sustainability and integrity is everything. From getting her degree in Science, focused on Sustainable Tourism and Outdoor Experiential Education to studying abroad in Costa Rica to moving to Maui in 2007 and everything in between – her entire life journey was surrounded on understanding more about the beauty that surrounds us. Her only interest was learning as much a she could about Hawaii’s culture and the magical ocean she was surrounded by. Her interest in fashion started when she began working for another swimwear brand on the island. She started hitting the books, doing research online, watching Youtube videos and doing everything she could to make sure she was well educated on the ins and outs of the industry and on running a business (something she knew she wanted to do on her own). But it was when she traveled to Brazil to set up production that something clicked. After being told she couldn’t look into the facilities, she quickly began to realize the intense and unethical reality of the industry.
Fast-forward to 2013, Kelley was laid-off, full of knowledge and unstoppable. Within six months she had created what we know as Manakai Swimwear. It was the beginning of her incredible journey as a business-owner, entrepreneur and total ladyboss! All too often, women are held back and discouraged from living up to their full potential – our abilities always being questioned. Chapman’s resilience, determination and will to learn everything she could about the industry is living proof that we can do anything when we put in the work.
Chapman knew sustainability was going to be at the forefront of her brand. Her focus was to create while limiting her impact as much as possible. And for her, sourcing was everything. “I think when anyone is interested in creating an ethical business the first step is looking at your raw materials, where they’re coming from, and who is making them.” Chapman tells HOKU. From the beginning she made sure her entire collection was made exclusively out of regenerated Nylon 6. And that’s not all, she paid careful attention to source her materials from a company whose morals and transparency matched her own. She sources her materials from Vita by Carvico, primarily because of their quality and clean technology. She emphasizes that being aware is key, “Most people don’t realize that the first step to creating a stretch fabric is to extract oil and through a chemical process you create a synthetic fiber. So it’s a no brainer that if we have all this excess, we should be figuring out a way to reuse it. We’re at the point where we don’t have any more time, we have to be innovative. Business should be at the forefront of this movement because essentially, we are the ones who are creating the trash!”
For Chapman, finding the right fabric wasn’t the only challenge she faced. “Sustainable or not running your own business comes with great challenge but great reward as well. For me the most difficult part is during my production process where I have minimums I have to reach, yardage to order -- I have to have all of my designs, grading, and plotting done ahead of time.” And while it was difficult at times, Kelley stayed hands on throughout the entire process. Which, certainly wasn’t easy if we might add! In her first year of production, Kelley explains that she had huge rolls of leftover fabric – she had to rework her process and ended up spending months figuring out exactly how much ‘spaghetti’ she needed. And, despite being dyslexic, she created her own incredible mathematical equation that determined everything to a T. “In that industry they’re always trying to tell you that you need extra fabric “just in case” and I was like, nope! I would come into the facilities and a) had already audited them and b) told them exactly how I wanted my yardage cut. I don’t think they’d ever been micromanaged like that before! My ultimate goal is to have no dead stock fabric sitting around” She says. For months, Chapman did everything she could to minimize her waste and ensure that her pieces were made as consciously as possible. From design to manufacturing to the set-up of her Lahaina store-front, Chapman put her entire soul into making a company that represented her.
And even when the designing is done and her marvelous pieces have been created, Chapman’s work is hardly close to being over. Not only is she an advocate and pioneer for sustainability and ethical initiatives, but she is a firm believer in women supporting other women. “In my dressing room I have a sign that says ‘remember you are beautiful’ – I’ve been in this industry a very long time and every day that someone walks into the dressing room they criticize their bodies. The way we talk to ourselves is really intense. I do it myself. I think one thing to be really clear is that my swimwear isn’t going to empower anyone. It’s my branding and lifestyle and the women I choose to showcase.” To Chapman, it’s all about inner beauty. Every woman should have the opportunity to feel beautiful and realize that beauty comes from within them. “I want women to realize that we are graceful and powerful beings. You don’t have to have a certain skin tone or have a certain body type to feel beautiful. Part of my mission is to show women that true beauty is in your grace and how you treat other people, yourself and this planet.” And Chapman’s mission flows throughout her entire brand – and with it she has created sustainable, comfortable, functional and damn sexy swimwear!
During our interview with Chapman, we all got a little emotional! It’s difficult for us women to feel beautiful without comparing ourselves to each other. We are all used to looking in the mirror and criticizing our imperfections. Every member of the HOKU team has dealt with issues relating to body-positivity, gender bias and imagining ourselves in positions of power. But it’s important to remember that our time is now. As women, the most powerful thing we can do is stand together. Chapman’s incredible story teaches us that not only is every woman beautiful, but also capable of so much more than we could have ever imagined. Whether you’re a woman trying to start a new club at school, applying for a new kick-ass job, or maybe even trying to start your own sustainable swimwear brand – we’re here to tell you, go for it!

]]>It is always a great honor when Manakai Swimwear makes the list with other sustainable brands such as: Mara Hoffman, Patagonia, Und Swim, Fisch, Vitamin A Swim, Wolven, Fair Harbor...just to name a few. Sustainable and Ethical swimwear is on the rise and I plan on continuing the journey proving that a business can be sustainable, ethical and have plenty of a "bottom line" to be successful. It also excites me to witness more and more brands choosing to be more sustainable.

"In a world full of fast-fashion, clothes are mass produced, chemically dyed and thrown away after one season. As a result, it can be hard to be eco-friendly while shopping for swimwear. Worry not, these are 30 companies that pride themselves in making quality swimwear that’s also sustainable." -SURFD

I had the pleasure of hiring and working alongside one of my favorite local Maui photographers here on island. Her name is Cadencia. She wrote a blog after we sat down and had a deeper conversation about my journey and a look into what makes Manakai special. Not too many people have sat me down and asked me about the details so I was excited to share my story. Here is it.
Hope you enjoy,
Kelley

always learning more, consuming less and learning more again. It begins to feel fun and empowering to know you’re making a difference to save the planet. I want the next generation to experience the beauty that is earth, straight up! So I was pretty excited to sit down with Kelley Chapman of Manakai Swimwear to talk about her journey starting Hawaii’s first eco-friendly swimwear brand, what the process is like to source materials, and the future of the textile industry."
Yes. As a child I spent my summers attending outdoor camps in the Appalachian Mountains. This experience was my introduction to the natural environment and shaped my deep connection to Mama Gaia.
“Leave No Trace” was embedded into my being as a child. I learned how to harvest food and water from the forest, navigate new terrain finding true north with only the sun and a stick, tune in and observe wildlife (their cues tell a story about what’s happening around you), and I learned how joyful and satisfied I am when immersed in nature.
My first vision quest was when I was 13 years old and I was sent out into the mountains on a solo trek with only 3 matches, a tarp, 3 ft of rope, pen, paper and a water bottle. For some people this experience may seem daunting but for me it was my initiation to becoming a voice for this sacred planet.
Fast forward several years I found myself graduating with a bachelor’s degree in science, focused on Sustainable Tourism and Outdoor Experiential Education.
After graduation I lived off the grid for 2 years in Cost Rica and Santa Fe, New Mexico. My experience in Costa Rica opened my eyes to the majestic sea. I was 23 years old the first time I put on a mask and witnessed the coral reefs and all its inhabitants. As I emerged from the water I sat on the rocky shore and had tears in my eyes. I wasn’t sad but I still to this day can’t put a finger on where exactly the tears came from. I clearly received a download or message if you will, giving me instructions to live in a coastal community. Never in a million years did I imagine finding my place on Earth, my home, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.
Serendipitously a year later MAUI presented itself to me. While driving around in my hometown of Atlanta, Georgia I was stuck in traffic, go figure, behind a car that was plastered with MAUI stickers. Upon arriving to my destination, a friend’s home for a clothing swap, I went to turn off the T.V., because Television blows, and there I found myself captivated by the imagery of this gorgeous island called MAUI. After a few moments I turned off the T.V. and joined the clothing swap. Can you guess what the first piece of clothing I randomly pick up from the pile? A Hula MAUI tee shirt! I laughed out loud and the very next day purchased a one-way ticket to MAUI. That was in 2007.
The moment I landed on MAUI I knew I was finally home. My only interest was diving into the vastness of the ocean environment and learning as much as possible about the rich, beautiful culture of Hawaii. Anytime someone ask me about Sustainability I have learned to not only look at Earth’s natural resources but its inhabitants as well. This is “Sustainable Tourism” at its best in case you were wondering.
When I tap into the mana of both the natural environment and culture of different locations around the globe I gain true reverence, therefor I naturally want to protect it and love it. My intentions are to inspire others to do the same.
Discovering more sustainable and ethically produced swimwear this day and age can be challenging, but it doesn’t have to be.
Different types of Spandex, Nylon, Lycra (to name a few) are all created by petrochemical companies. I will speak specifically about one of the top producers of synthetic fabrics in the U.S.A in a moment but let’s start from the beginning.
I often ask people if they know the first step to producing the swimwear they are wearing? No? “Petro” as in petroleum. First step to creating any virgin synthetic stretch fabric is extracting oil. The petroleum is then polymerized into long, linear chemical bonds or building blocks. The easiest way for me to explain this in layman terms is imagine the final result ending in a plastic synthetic “cotton-like” structure but it isn’t a plant base product, it is a petrochemical base product, that gets made into a yarn and then woven into a fabric.
About 6 years ago I started researching stretch fabric and how it is made and why? Chemist from around the world spent years attempting to birth the perfect synthetic textiles and around the mid 1930’s several break throughs happened. I discovered petroleum base clothing has not been around that long historically speaking and conventionally speaking plant base materials were used for swimwear back in the day, one specifically called Lastex which is cotton or rayon covered in rubber.
During the 1930’s many chemist and petrochemical companies were attempting to replicate artificial silk due to the constant inflation of silk. Japan and USA relations were struggling, and the cost of silk was fairly expensive. The beginning of synthetic fabric was soon to be discovered and yet there was no clear vison on the environmental impact it would create.
A chemist and leader in organic chemistry, Dr. Wallace Hume Carothers, was hired by a well-known and extremely powerful petrochemical company name DuPont back in the early 30’s and in 1934 he created the first Nylon fabric which DuPont later put a patent on. Turns out this fabric was utilized for many things in the apparel industry and beyond. DuPont also had a patent on the name Lycra and but sold this brand/patent for 4 billion dollars. Yes, there is A LOT OF MONEY in the petrochemical Industry, so we should all be paying close attention to their practices and intentions.
Now if you are reading this and you live in the Hawaiian Islands and your ears don’t perk up after hearing the name DuPont you are not paying attention.
Yes, we are talking about the same DuPont company that participates in seed crop research all throughout Hawai’i. That’s another topic and I’m already over sharing but hey we should ALL know where virgin Lycra and Nylon began because it is a huge part of “the story”!
ALL of Manakai’s suits are made from 78% recycled Nylon 6 (regenerated by ECONYL®) & and 22% elastane. ECONYL®, is derived from derelict commercial fishing nets and industrial waste, which is collected through a buyback program from 5 countries.
I source my materials from Vita by Carvico who states: “Our sustainable techno-fabric, made of ECONYL® regenerated Nylon turns waste problems into fashion and interior solutions”.
I choose to source from this company because of their transparency. They create yearly environmental assessments for us ALL to read.
Their knowledge and innovative technology which lessens the impact of production is notable. One of the cleanest technologies producing stretch fabric to be exact. Because of their superior and advanced technology this company is able to create a highly sought-after product in a more conscious manner. When we compare a virgin stretch fabric next to a regenerated Nylon 6 stretch fabric made by ECONYL® yarn, from an environmental impact point of view, the results are mind blowing. Also tested to be 2X stronger than any leading fabric on the market! Quality over Quantity is my moto.
I see Manakai being recognized for holding a high level of integrity for this industry world-wide.
I see Manakai being recognized as Hawaii’s first sustainable and ethical swimwear company.
I see Manakai continuing to create one of kind seamless and fully reversible swimwear that women world-wide go to for their very own Eco-Swimwear.
I see Manakai’s Eco-Boutique becoming a place every eco babe wants to visit not only because of the swimwear but also because there are many lifestyle products I want to introduce to everyone so we can get away from plastic consumption. I recently introduced shampoo bars and conditioner bars. For the first time my personal bathroom is plastic free and I want to show my fellow sisters how to do the same thing. I also source the best of the best when it comes to reef safe sunscreen, yummy locally crafted oils for hair and body and much more.
Right now, I am slowly building my team with people who align with my mission: Sustainable and Ethical swimwear, women empowerment and ocean conservation. I envision a beautiful group of people working for Manakai and believe in the BRAND and the lifestyle.
In April I plan of going to Italy to take a tour of Carvico’s facility and see first-hand how the fabrics are made and learn more about the process and technology involved. My husband Vini from Shoots Productions will be there with me documenting this exciting experience too.
The end of this year I plan on launching my first active line with surf/yoga leggings and a surf top. So to all my surfing sisters out there who want to shift from wearing virgin stretch fabric to sustainable and ethically produced fabrics I look forward to meeting you.
I will be planting the seeds and begin drawing up several ideas for dresses, kimonos and a few other categories too…of course using proper eco-materials.
